A Day On MarsImmersive AV Installation using sounds from Mars2026
In 2021, Perseverance landed on Mars – a nuclear-powered rover from NASA whose mission is to search for signs of life. Uni Árting, who is part of the mission, and Jens L. Thomsen have gained access to material from Perseverance, which they have processed and repurposed. The result is a sound work where solely radiograms and recordings from a day on Mars are woven together into an immersive AV experience. For the project, they collaborated with Villiam Soo, who visualized and designed the lighting for the work.
This is not the first time Jens L. Thomsen and Uni Árting have explored the borderland between science and art. With their remarkable project Føroyar 5.2, they examined the question “What do the Faroe Islands sound like?” in a sound and video installation based on seismic data from the Faroese underground.
Concept & Composition by Jens L. Thomsen and Uni Árting, researcher at Jarðfeingi and the University of Oslo, NASA M2020 Science Team.
The piece was commissioned by the Nordic House in the Faroe Islands.
